Moderation System ideas - from Ronny Vindenes #1 Users gain points for writing articles with high ratings, and lose points for writing articles with low ratings. Once you have X amounts of points, these points can be spent on publishing/sponsoring other peoples unpublished articles. If the sponsored article is rated high the sponsor gains new points that he can spend on sponsoring new articles, if the sponsored article is rated low he loses more points, potentially so that he must write new good quality articles himself before being able to sponsor again. Pro: - Hard to scam the system - Good articles will be published early because the sponsor gains something from sponsoring good articles Con: - Maybe hard to find the right values to assign to the ratings and to the thresholds for being able to sponsor - Mildly more expensive computationally to rate an article as both the author and sponsor must have their points adjusted #2 Users having an average rating > 4.0 and atleast X number of ratings, get to see and rate unpublished articles. When an article reaches an average rating > 3.0 with Y number of ratings it is automatically published. Pro: - All articles will be rated by the time it is available to the general public (who in theory are less able to judge for them selves if it is good or not) - Only those articles deemed good by a group of the most qualified people are published Con: - Articles must get Y amounts of ratings to be published which can result in genuinely good articles taking a long time to be published - Relatively few users rate the articles so the group of users who get to rate unpublished articles will potentially grow very slowly -- Brainstorming about publish by voting - irc log: **alkemann** my soon to be partner (in crime, not marriage), had an idea i asked him to write up for the bakery specc. i just got the gist of it, but i think it was something like : when a new article is posted by regular users, everyone above that level can read and rate them. instead of being published by single moderator, they get published after x amount of yes votes or by the rating system. or some such **alkemann** it will give those accepted authors (who we will accept for quality) a say, spread the power, added level of QA and ease the workload of single moderators **gwoo** alkemann: i kinda like that. we can promote people based on how many articles they have written **alkemann** if you need x amount of points before the article goes public, we could give different power of voting to different user types and for amount of accepted articles **gwoo** alkemann: then we need the up/down for the "authorities" **jperras** my only concern is going to be what the threshold for 'higher level' users will be **alkemann** well lets say accepted authors have a value of 1, moderators of 5. need a value of 15 and at least 1 moderator **jperras** only positive points allowed? **gwoo** yeah **jperras** so over time, the more authors are added, the easier an article will become to push to the front page Report. i.e. no one can 'vote down' an article. but I guess if we restrict it to needing at least one moderator it should be ok **lkemann** yea need some finess to this rule. if a moderator sends a message with suggested improvements, should the article then be put offline for all? not sure i agree with only positive votes.. with it, eventually all articles could be published
